THE NICKERSON COLLECTION

A Special Resource on Learning and Developmental Disabilities
at the Bedford Free Public Library

The Daniel R. Nickerson Foundation has provided funding for the development of a special collection of materials on learning and developmental disabilities at the Bedford Free Public Library. The Foundation's gift has allowed the library to acquire many of the latest and most relevant materials on this topic and to become a major regional resource within Eastern Massachusetts.

Daniel Nickerson was a youngster who faced many challenges. In his honor, his family has established a collection of books aimed at helping families cope with learning and other developmental disabilities, including autism, Down syndrome, Tourette's syndrome, Asperger's disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), epilepsy, craniofacial differences, learning disabilities, and many others. Bedford Library offers resources to combat the isolation that often accompanies families dealing with developmental disabilities.

In addition to providing access to the books in the collection, the Library can help connect families to organizations and support groups through the Minuteman Community Information File. Reference librarians can also use the Internet to locate medical specialists, special groups, and other 'people' resources.

Parents receiving a diagnosis for their child's condition often respond with both grief and relief; grief at their child's loss of what is considered a 'normal' life, and relief in knowing that they are dealing with a recognized condition.

For parents to move forward from this point, good information becomes critically important. It is helpful to find others who have had similar experiences, to know whom one can turn to for help, to consider alternative therapies, and to hear about other ways in which help can be obtained.

The list of resources in the Nickerson Collection is pasted below, but can also be found at http://www.bedfordlibrary.net/Nickerson.htm

Questions may be directed to the reference desk, which can be accessed through the main library's number at (781) 275-9440 or (781) 275-6347 (TTY). The reference desk can also be reached by e-mail at bedford@mln.lib.ma.us
