The Arc of Massachusetts needs your help in recognizing Distinguished Citizens and Personal Achievement!

The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 16th.
The Distinguished Citizen Awards recognize individuals, groups, or organizations that have made a significant contribution or demonstrated long-term commitment to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Nominees may have distinguished themselves by accomplishing one of the following: dedicated their lives to a positive goal; made new inroads or connections to the broader community; or developed service options such as housing, employment, friendships or recreation. Volunteers, public officials, and others may be nominated and recognized. In addition, we recognize individuals with disabilities who demonstrate significant personal achievement.
(See the Nomination Form for more details. Please make certain that the nominations are clear and legible, typed on 2 pages or less. Relevant supporting materials, such as an article or letters, make a difference in decisions.)
A. DISTINGUISHED CITIZEN AWARDS
1. Teachers, schools or school systems that have developed inclusive practices that allow students with disabilities to receive their education alongside peers without disabilities or that have developed programs of excellence for students with disabilities.
2. Employees, employers or companies that aid individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the workplace.
3. Individuals, agencies, places of worship or businesses that support individuals to live in their communities. This includes support of inclusion in community services or activities, in religious services and observances, and as consumers.
4. General community health or service providers such as hospitals, YMCA, Girls/Boys Clubs, etc. which display commitment to integrating persons with disabilities in their ongoing programs.
5. Individuals, groups or agencies in the disabilities field that reflect an extraordinary commitment over time to individuals or families.
6. Direct Support professionals who consistently demonstrate excellence, creativity and commitment in providing supports to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
B. PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
These awards will be given to persons with an intellectual/developmental disability.
1. The Michael Becker Award for Community Service is presented to an individual with an intellectual/developmental disability who has distinguished him- or herself in service to others. Such achievement can include civic activity or volunteering to help others. This award was created in memory of the late Michael Becker, son of Angela and Dan Becker. His 38 years were full of rich experiences with family, friends, and community. Mike's active life included giving back to his community through a variety of volunteer activities, including walks for hunger, diabetes, and cancer; volunteering in a homeless shelter; and delivering meals to elders who were shut-in.
2. The Nickerson Personal Achievement Award is presented to an individual who has met the challenges of his/her disability in some outstanding way. This award was instituted in memory of Daniel Nickerson, son of Ray and Doris Nickerson.
