A Gift of Life Insurance
You may wish to contribute a life insurance policy to The Arc of Massachusetts that is no longer needed for its original purpose. Simply ask the life insurance company for a Designation of Beneficiary form. If you name The Arc of Massachusetts as the beneficiary, the proceeds of the policy will pass to The Arc of Massachusetts after your death.
To make an irrevocable transfer that will receive gift credit, you must name The Arc both beneficiary and owner. You will receive gift credit for the cash surrender value of the policy, and you may claim that value as an income tax deduction in the year of the transfer. The Arc of Massachusetts will redeem the policy for its cash value and use the proceeds for a specific purpose, if you so desire.
A Gift of Securities
If you own appreciated securities such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds (held more than 12 months), you can benefit in two ways by making a gift of securities to The Arc of Massachusetts. First, you can claim a charitable income tax deduction for the full value of the shares. The deduction is limited to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income in the year of the gift. As with outright gifts of cash or real estate, any amount exceeding the contribution ceiling can be carried forward and deducted for up to five more years. Second, you can avoid the capital gains tax that would have been due if you sold the shares.
To make a gift of securities to The Arc of Massachusetts, please contact Lizette Redmond at Janney Montgomery Scott, LLC. The account number for The Arc of Massachusetts is 11876780, and their DTC number is 0374. The Arc of Massachusetts' Tax I.D. Number is 04-2223502.
A Gift of Real Estate
Real estate held more than 12 months can be contributed outright to The Arc of Massachusetts. This entitles you to an income tax deduction (30 percent of adjusted gross income in the year of the gift) based on the current, appraised fair market value. You would also avoid a potential capital gains tax on the property.
It is also possible to transfer real estate to a charitable trust while retaining the income from the trust. Such a plan enables you to convert a non-income-producing asset to new income, receive an income tax deduction for part of the gift, and avoid capital gains tax when the property is sold by the trust. Proceeds of the policy would pass to The Arc of Massachusetts at your death.
Thank you for your support of gifts and time.
