July 24, 2007 - Household Hazards, a report released today by Women Voices for the Earth, an AHT affiliate, presents mounting evidence that exposure to chemicals in cleaning products is linked with health problems in people, specifically, it looks at the research on cleaning chemicals such as monoethanolamine (MEA) and ammonium quaternary compounds linked to asthma, and glycol ethers, alkyl phenol ethoxylates and phthalates linked to reproductive harm (e.g. birth defects and fertility problems).
The report details specific ingredients in household cleaners that could pose harm - particularly to children, women and workers - and calls for greater regulation of cleaning products sold on store shelves. In Massachusetts, AHT supports legislation requiring safer cleaning products in schools, day care centers, hospitals, and other public facilities across the state.
